With immeasurable sadness, we announce the passing of Thomas Alexander Benjamin, born to the late Elliot Benjamin and the late Esther Benjamin.
Thomas loved to fish, was an avid news spectator, and was a dedicated historian. He also had a great love for sports, with the Carolina Panthers being his favorite team. Thomas had a deep love for the Lord and was knowledgeable about Bible scripture. He was the 6th child out of 17 siblings and attended Brevard High School in 1967. After high school, he served in the US Army and worked for the VA Environmental Service.
Preceding him in death, Willemenia Benjamin Gray, Sandra Benjamin, Elliot, Benjamin Jr, James Benjamin, Samuel Benjamin, Steve Benjamin, Linda Benjamin Hawkins, Marlene Benjamin, David Benjamin, and Cynthia Benjamin.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 30-plus years, Mrs. Kathleen Koon Benjamin, and his daughters, Mrs. Kita Koon Bowman (Randy), Ms. Nicole Offord, and Ms. Dawn Raini Long. He also leaves behind his cherished granddaughters, Jada Bowman Spence (Ventera) and Shaneen Long, grandsons Marcus Bowman, Jerome, and Jermaine Patton, brothers: Joseph Benjamin (Leslie) of Newport, TN. & Leslie Benjamin Knoxville TN. Sisters: Cecilia Benjamin Howell (late Sammy) Brevard, NC, Mary Benjamin Arrington (Ernest) of Durham, NC., Wanda Benjamin, Brevard, NC., and Valarie Benjamin Carmichael (William) Newport, TN. His beloved Great grandchildren: Aubrey, Jayden, Aria Spence, Arleigh, Aamani, Autumn, Malachi, Makai Long, Caleigh, Jykeise, and Milia Malaysia, Jykel, King, Naomi, Karleigh, Jermoni, Jermaine Patton. (Mother-in-Law) Eva Whitesides. In-laws Cynthia Washington (Maurice), Michael Koon, David Lee Whiteside, James Whiteside (Mildred), and Patricia Fruster (Morris), Reginald Whitesides (deceased).
Thomas's passing leaves a void in the lives of countless individuals fortunate enough to have known him. A host of nieces, nephews, and cousins will deeply miss him, and Thomas will be deeply missed by all who know him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. A celebration of Thomas's life will be announced at a later date.
A Funeral Service to honor the life of Thomas will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Brown Temple CME Church (32 Phifer St.) at 11am. He will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral. Viewing will be held Friday, November 24, 2023, from 12pm to 6pm at Avery's Memorial Chapel. Burial will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 10am at the Western Carolina Veteran Cemetery. The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
