Simeon Lamark Aiken was born on July 7, 2006, in Asheville, NC to Shykita Edgerton Hill and Kendrick Aiken. He transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, June 25, 2023. He was 16 years old.
There are 5 Simeons in the Bible, but he was named after the prophet that God promised would see Jesus before he died, and when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus into the temple, the prophet immediately recognized Jesus as the Messiah. (Luke 2: 25-35)
Simeon contracted meningitis when he was 8 months old. Despite the highly unfavorable prognosis, Simeon went on to defy the odds given by man. After he was diagnosed with meningitis the doctors said that he could not hear, but we knew better because his name is also significant because it means “to hear”. Simeon was very happy, loving, smart, attentive, mischievous, and funny. He had a way of communicating without words. If he did not want to be bothered by you, he would let you know by either leaving the room or shutting his door and standing behind the door so that you could not enter. He would turn his back on you if he was not interested in what you had to say, or if he did not like what you said. He had a strong will to survive, which was proven repeatedly every time he overcame each medical emergency and surgery. Through Simeon’s triumphs, GOD showed us that HE is still in the miracle working business. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives for almost 17 years.
Simeon’s ability to survive was enhanced by the love, care, and skills of several invaluable nurses especially Kim Bradford, Kathryn Byrd, Bridget Hansel, Emma Ingram and Chytasia Mattox.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Patsy L. Edgerton, maternal great-grandmother, Anna B. Edgerton, aunt, Sherry A. Hall, and grandfathers Asfaw Woldu and O’dell Dixon.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents Shykita Edgerton Hill, Courtney Hill, and Kendrick Aiken, his sister Nyah Vernell Aiken, his grandmothers Vernell Woldu and Elaine Watts, aunts Elaine Hall, Danielle Hall, Alyson Dunlap (Scott), and Jennifer Threlkeld (Keith), uncles Corey Edgerton, Darius Edgerton, Terry Lee Edgerton (Kathy), Rashad Hasan (Shirley), H.K. Edgerton, Takele Woldu, and Ermias Woldu, and other special relatives and friends.
