Robert L. McCants, Sr., affectionately known as "Doc," was born on March 14, 1942 in Asheville. He departed this life at Emerald Ridge Rehabilitation and Care Center on August 24, 2022. Doc was the son of the late Ellen Ruff Williams and the late Charlie McCants. He attended Stephens Lee High School, where he was a drum major for the marching band for 3 years, and he graduated in 1961. He was employed by Care Partners for 44 years and lived out his retirement amongst his loving family and friends.

Robert was a gentle soul with an amazing flare for cooking, recalling family history and stories. He was a huge fan of all HBCU marching bands and was an NFL fan of any team that Tom Brady played for. Doc was loved for his calm spirit, infectious laughter and timeless wisdom.

Other than his loving parents, he was also preceded in death by eldest daughter Gloria Wright, four brothers and six sisters, and a granddaughter Marquita McCants. He will be greatly loved and remembered as an honorable man.

Doc leaves behind to cherish his life, his wife Edith McCants, his beloved children Valerie Smith, Robin McCants, Benita McCants and Robert McCants Jr., 12 grandchildren, and 26 great- grandchildren. He will also be remembered and loved by his many nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members, friends and classmates. May he rest in peace until we are all together again.
