Mr. Thomas Whiteside, Sr, Obituary

Mr. Thomas Daniel Whiteside, Sr. was born on July 27, 1944 in Asheville, North Carolina to the late John B. Whiteside and Eliza Holbert-Whiteside. Mr. Whiteside was a 1962 graduate of Stephens Lee High School in Asheville, North Carolina. He later attended Blanton’s Business College with a major in Accounting. On October 24, 1965 he married the love of his life, Mrs. Inez H. P. Whiteside. Their union blessed them with a son and a daughter.

He was a Medical Photographer and retired from the Charles George VA Medical Center in 2015 after 48 years of federal service. Mr. Whiteside accepted Christ as his personal Savior in his late teenage years. For almost 60 years, he was a member of Sycamore Temple Church of God in Christ. Through the years he served as a Deacon, church van driver, Trustee, and member of the Finance Committee. Mr. Whiteside served as a Specialist in the United States Army. He served in Vietnam and was wounded in action. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal,  National Defense Service Medal and three Purple Heart medals for each of his wounds. Mr. Whiteside was a quiet man that loved the Lord, his family and everyone that he was able to talk to. He had a love for classic cars and listening to music. Even into his last days, he enjoyed watching Sanford and Son hence naming his two trucks Fred and Lamont.

Mr. Whiteside was proceeded in death by his parents, John, and Eliza Holbert-Whiteside, seven sisters, Mrs. Sarah Lampley, Mrs. Alberta Farrow, Mrs. Victoria Allen, Mrs. Eloise Ray, Mrs. Rachel Coleman, Miss. Phalice Whiteside, and Mrs. Alice Rutherford, five brothers, Mr. Russell Whiteside, Mr. Massey Whiteside, Sr., Mr. Clifton Whiteside, Sr., Mr. David Whiteside, Sr., and Mr. Willie Whiteside.

Mr. Whiteside leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of over 55 years, Mrs. Inez H. P. Whiteside of the home, son, Thomas D. Whiteside, Jr. of Asheville, NC, daughter, Tymeka Y. Whiteside of Morrisville, NC, granddaughter, Capt. Ashleigh J. Whiteside – US Army of Grafenwoehr, Bavaria, Germany and grandson, Dr. Travis D. Whiteside (Dr. Chohnice Daniels) of Asheville, NC., a nephew like a brother Mr. Larry Whiteside (Martha) of Asheville, NC, a large host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Although he was the natural father to two children, he was a “Dad”, “Daddy”, and “Pop” to many.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 1pm in the sanctuary of Sycamore Temple COGIC, located on 11 N. Ann Street Asheville, NC. Interment will be held on Monday, April 5, 2021 at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC, at 10am. Viewing will be held on Friday April 2, 2021 at Avery's Memorial Chapel from 10am until 7pm. Services will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
