Mayo Pickett, age 89, completed his earthly journey and moved to his eternal Heavenly home on Wednesday January 27, 2021. He was born in Beulaville, NC to the late Roosevelt and Eliza Jane Lee Pickett. He completed his high school education at Chinquapin High School in Duplin County, NC in 1950. Mayo entered the United States Army serving in the Korean War from 1951-1956. After returning from service to his country, he married his beautiful wife of 65 years, Mrs. Ethel Murphy Pickett. Through this union they were blessed with daughters, Cynthia Pickett and Angela Pickett.
He graduated from Harris Barber College in Raleigh, NC in 1957. While in barber college, he was recruited by Mr. Vernon Miller (Cat Miller) to relocate to Asheville and began his career as a barber at Do Drop In Barber Shop on Eagle and Market Streets. Mayo was a well-known barber in Asheville for over 60 years until his declining health. He also crafted his skills at other well-known barber shops in Asheville's black community: Well Groomed Barber Shop, Wilson Barber Shop, Smooth's Do Drop In Barber Shop and Mrs. G's Barber and Beauty Shop. To his customers and friends, he is known simply as "Pick."
Mayo will be remembered as a soft-spoken and humble man, for his love of God, love of family and friends, his beautiful smile, and his even more beautiful singing voice. All will remember his spiritual gift of kindness. Pick was a longtime member of Hill Street Baptist Church where he also served as an Honorary Trustee. He loved his church, church family, Sunday School, worship service and music ministry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death and is now reunited with his beloved sister Flora Ree Williams, and four brothers: Roosevelt Jr., Hilton, Arto and Wiley Pickett.
Mayo is survived by his wife Ethel Murphy Pickett, daughters Cynthia Pickett and Angela Pickett of Asheville, sister Eloise Washington of Warsaw, brothers Harold Pickett (Loyce) of Marana, AZ, Milton Pickett (Phyllis) of Evanston, IL and Bryant Pickett of Pensacola, FL, sisters-in-law Annie Carroll of Brooklyn, NY and Vanelle P. West of Owing Mill, MD, grandchildren Darnell Pickett (Patrice) of Charlotte, Danielle Pickett of Asheville, Daniel Pickett of Menomonee Falls, WI, and Alixes P. Barrett (Ryan) of Fort Wainwright, AK, great-grandchildren Kamryn Pickett, Jayson Pickett and Tyler Pickett of Charlotte, and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
Funeral Service to honor the life of Mr. Mayo "Pick" Pickett will be held at Hill Street Baptist Church on Wednesday, February 3rd at 11am. Pastor Brian Keith Scott will officiate. Burial will immediately follow the funeral at the Western North Carolina Veterans Cemetery located in Black Mountain. Viewing for Mr. Pickett will be held Tuesday February 2nd from 10am till 7pm at Avery's Memorial Chapel. The funeral will be live-streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
