Maxine Simuel Jones was born in Asheville, NC, on May 1, 1944. She was the daughter of Willie Simuel and Jesse Hall Simuel and the wife of Nathaniel Jones of Asheville.
She attended Stephens-Lee High School where she excelled in basketball and was subsequently inducted into the Stephens-Lee Hall of Fame in 2006 for her outstanding abilities.
Maxine was a member of the Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an usher and was a member of the Sick and Bereaved Committee. She was also a member of the Usher's Union.
She was preceded in death by her son Keith Simuel, her parents, and brothers Willie Lee and Danny Simuel.
She is survived by her children Patricia Simuel Wilson of Hickory, Henry Marvels of Virginia / Asheville, and Walter Marvels (Tanyana) of Charlotte, grandchildren Camree Marvels, Jasmine Marvels, De’Ja Marvels, Paul Wright, Shankita Wilson, Garfield Wilson, and Walter Wilson, seven great-grandchildren, special cousin Mrs. Dale Scott, very special friends Ruth Watson, Lucille Tobe, Vivian Jones, Thomasina Hines, the Hall Family, the Moss Family, the Bethea Family, the Nazareth Usher Board, and a host of other family members and friends.
A Funeral Service to honor the life of Maxine will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church (146 Pine St.), at 3pm. She will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Viewing will be held at Avery's Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 12pm-7pm. The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
