Matthew Smith Obituary

Matthew L. Smith, son of Dale Smith and the late Charles Smith, was born on July 13, 1975, in Asheville, North Carolina. He departed this life on Monday, December 16, 2024.

He graduated from Asheville High School, where he was a member of the ROTC. He was a decorated Marine in the United States Marine Corps. After serving in the Marine Corps, he attended Johnson & Wales Culinary University, where he developed his love for culinary arts. Following culinary school, he worked in restaurant management until the present day. He had a passion for cooking for family, friends, and church. He was an avid fisherman and loved hunting with his father, uncles, brother, nephews, and great-nephew.

He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. He never met a stranger and touched everyone he met. He was a great storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor and a smile that would light up a room.

Matthew was a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the food ministry. His father, Charles Smith, and niece, X-Zavia Young, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his mother, Dale Smith, sisters Yvonne Smith (Keith), Barbara Smith, Stacy Smith-Langston (Martin), and Yolanda Battle (Jermaine); brother, Charles Smith II; nieces Akelia Young and Mia Young; Nephews Jermon Battle, Javon Battle, Caden Langston; great-nephew Loyal Young; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
