Mary Nesbitt Obituary

Mary Redfern Nesbitt, 80, of Asheville, was born to the late Maebelle Cureton and the late Julius Caesar Hansberry. She departed this life on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

 

Mary retired from the Asheville VA Medical Center after more than 30 years of dedicated service. Following her retirement, she enjoyed shopping and spending quality time with her family and loved ones. She was also a faithful and devoted member of Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church.

 

Other than her parents, Mary was also preceded in death by brothers Richard Blue, Robert Blue, Henry Lee Anderson, and Howard Anderson, children Anthony Curtis Redfern, Adrienne Redfern, and Gerry Redfern, and grandson Antwan “Buddy” Redfern.

 

She leaves to cherish her loving memories her husband Andrew Nesbitt, sons Gary Redfern (Janice), and Reginald Redfern, daughter Zaneta Redfern, sisters Julia Spencer, her best friend and shopping partner Georgianna Shivers (Charles), Debra Anderson, and Joyce Ann Burgin, her sister-cousin / special daughter Rolanda Roberts, all of Asheville, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.

 

Mary’s kindness, strength, and love for her family will forever be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

 

A Funeral Service to honor the life of Mary will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church (100 Carroll Ave.), at 1pm. Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 12pm at the Western Carolina Veteran Cemetery in Black Mountain. Per Ms. Mary's request, there will be NO public viewing!!! The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
