At age 84, Martha Carroll James Means (aka “GG”) transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, December 10, 2022. She is preceded in death by her mother, Martha Edith James, and her father, Johnson S. James. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Carroll Means; grandchildren, Timothy Means and Tiffany Means; brother, Johnson S. James II; sister-in-law Margaret Harrison; and goddaughter, Barbara Allen, all of Asheville, NC. Martha is also survived by nieces and nephews: Johnson S. James III and Johnson S. James IV, both of Columbus, OH; Kevin Shaw & family of Atlanta, GA; Rhonda Wynn & family, Natasha Watkins, Terick Watkins, and Jonathan Rice, all of Asheville.
A lifelong resident of Asheville, Martha’s compassionate heart led her to take a job at the Asheville Orthopedic Hospital (now known as CarePartners) working with children during the Polio crisis. She remained a dedicated employee of CarePartners Rehabilitation Hospital for over 50 years.
Martha held several positions of service in the community, including head usher (gatekeeper for the Lord) at her home church of Shiloh AME Zion, and board member at her local credit union.
Anyone who knows Martha knows she loved shopping and traveling with friends. In her younger years, she also enjoyed baking pound cakes and knitting for her family. But one of the things she will be remembered and missed for the most is her steadfastness. She always “showed up” for her family and friends, and she and her dependable nature will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral to honor Martha’s life will be held Friday, December 16, 2022, at 1pm at Shiloh AME Zion Church (95 Shiloh Rd, Asheville, NC 28803). She will lie in state from 12pm until the start of the service. Burial will also be held at Shiloh AME Zion Church.
