Major Mayfield Obituary

Major Mayfield departed this life January 28, 2024, at the age of 95.

A native of Chester SC, he was the son of Frank and Katie Peay Mayfield. Major was preceded in death by both parents, and his wife of 63 years Helen Hall Mayfield, son Reuben (Ruby) Mayfield, and grandson Travis D. Mayfield.

After serving in the Navy for 3 years, he moved to Asheville in 1951 to raise his family.

Major worked at the VA Hospital in Asheville for 30+ years. He also drove a school bus in the 70's, worked with the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department in the 80's, and was a foster grandparent at Hall Fletcher Elementary School in the 90's. As a pillar in the neighborhood, Major was known and loved by many.

He was very active at Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church, where he has been a member for 65 years. He served as a deacon, member of the men's choir, chair of the Benevolent Fund, Hospitality Club and part of the finance committee. Major became Deacon Emeritus last year July 2023.

Major enjoyed going out listening to and dancing while his son Reuben was playing sax and keyboard, playing tag with his grandson Bryant, going to watch his son Nathan follow in his footsteps with bowling, playing ball and board games with Kater his great - grand, or just spending time with family. His heart was always happy.

He really enjoyed walking! Strolling through Aston Park and up South French Broad Ave. was where you could find him. He was a "rock star" at the Senior Opportunity Center (as he would say "listen to them tell lies"). He enjoyed the new friends he made and the old ones he had.

Major is the patriarch of the family, showing us how to love and be loved, and meeting someone with open hearts. He was always polite and cheerful as if trouble were a stranger. He never met anyone without a smile.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Sharlen Mayfield of the home, Major Nathan Mayfield (Jackie), Karen L. Pierson (Phil) of Dayton, OH, Laura K. Frazier, Aquila Mayfield (Cynthia), a nephew whom he raised as his son, Bernard Bryant (Marva) of Charlotte, NC, a special great-granddaughter Karter M. Jones, numerous grandchildren, several great-grands and great- great-grands, and many other relatives and friends.
