Leon Jones Obituary

Leon Eugene “Gardner” Jones was born on December 19, 1967, in Asheville, North Carolina, and departed this life on March 26, 2026.

He was born to the late Ida Mae Gardner and James Jones. Leon was lovingly raised by Isaiah Gadson, who played a significant and devoted role in his life.

Leon attended and graduated from Asheville High School. He was employed at McDonald’s for many years, Memorial Mission Hospital, and later worked with Buncombe County Schools.

Leon began his walk with Christ at Johnson Memorial COGIC under the leadership of the late Elder T.L. Smith, where he faithfully served and sang on the choir. He later joined New Birth Church under Pastor D.L. McDay, where he continued his service on the choir and was ordained as a Deacon. Leon remained faithful in his service until his health began to decline. Above all, Leon loved the Lord and remained grounded in his faith.

Leon was known for his love of music and ministry, and for his sharp, distinguished style. Whether dressed in a tailored suit or coordinating his signature bow ties, Leon took pride in his appearance and carried himself with confidence and grace. He was also a gifted and passionate singer, often ministering through song, with one of his signature selections being ‘My Soul Has Been Anchored,’ a song that truly reflected his faith and spirit.

And let’s not forget to shine light on his love for cooking from chicken to casseroles and everything in between. Leon poured his love into every single meal.

He was preceded in death by his longtime companion Kimberly Brank.

Leon leaves to cherish his memory sister Melissa Doinne Gardner, who lovingly cared for him as his devoted caregiver, brother James Gardner, niece O’Maria Gardner, nephew Iz’Nique Gardner, stepchildren Alisha Brank, Candie Featherstone, Jenice Featherstone, and Kiyarra Collins, godmother Johana Johnson, godchild Domanii Bethea, and a host of grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

Leon shared a special bond with his best friend Charles “Cap” Pickens, and a special friend Zina Featherstone.

Leon will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Memorial Service to honor the life of Leon will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at New Birth of New Bethel Baptist Church (508 South French Broad Ave.), at 2pm. Viewing will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Avery's Memorial Chapel from 12pm -7pm.
