John Walker Hill was born April 1, 1942, in Brevard, NC. He was the son of the late Fred Douglas Hill and the late Lois Sizemore Hill.

He attended Pickens County Training School and graduated from Clear View High School in Easley, SC in 1960, then attended South Carolina State College (1960-1961). John joined the U.S. Army in June 1963 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC from 1963-1966. He was employed with IBM from1967-1998 then worked with Caterpillar Corporation from 1998-2009. John was a member of Griffin Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pickens, SC. He loved the Lord and shared the gospel with all he encountered.

John enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and traveling with his family during the earlier years of his life. He loved music (Jimi Hendrix and Sade were a couple of his favorite artist), sometimes making up his own lyrics to songs. John would share scriptures, Bible lessons and Bibles with his family and friends, often giving homework lessons to ensure that you understood the knowledge shared. He was the patriarch of the family, leading with a loving God filled spirit. He was a husband, dad, pops, stepdad, granddad, “Sam,” friend, mentor, advisor, and listener. Many would seek John’s wisdom and guidance for relationships, finances, and at times for a listening ear. His voice in the uplifting of God's kingdom, and his constant spreading of the gospel assures us that he is resting with the Lord.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Carol Shivers Hill of 35 years, in which brought together a blended family consisting of three sons Eric Gamal Ashemore, John Wynton Hill, and James Franklin Ashemore (Katherine ), Newport News, VA, one daughter Chastity Samara Horton (Vince), two stepdaughters Tamekia Miller Madden (David), and Britney Leigh Miller both of Asheville, 11 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Graveside Service to honor the life of John Hill, will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Sunset Cemetery (1138 Sweeten Creek Rd), at 1pm. Viewing will be held at Avery's Memorial Chapel on Thursday, September 28, 2023, from 12pm to 7pm. The service will be live streamed on Avery’s Memorial Chapel’s Facebook page.
