James "Jimmy" Hallum Obituary

James “Jimmy” Hallum transitioned at his home on October 16, 2020.

Jimmy was one of the first African-Americans to attend UNC-Asheville in 1962. He traveled with a semi-pro baseball team throughout Canada in his early twenty’s, was a veteran of the Vietnam war, an avid golfer who played at courses throughout the United States, and won many awards and trophies during his golfing years.

Jimmy was a bartender and cook throughout his career.

He is preceded in death by his parents H. Edward Hallum and Nannie K. Hallum, and his sister Ann Hallum.

Left to cherish his memory is his son Todd Pollard of Binghamton NY, brothers Leo Wood of Mt. Vernon NY and Clifford Hallum of Asheville NC, sisters Lydia Hallum of Belmont NC and Cynthia Hallum of Asheville NC, aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many many friends who all will miss him dearly.

Committal Services for Mr. James “Jimmy" Hallum will be held at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery on Friday, October 23. The Family will celebrate the life of Jimmy with a balloon release on Saturday, October 24, at 1:00pm at Overlook Apartments, 127 Bartlett Street Asheville NC.

Due to Covid Restrictions cards of condolences can be mailed to Cynthia Hallum, 9 John Street Apt. C, Asheville NC 28801.
