Helen Birdell McMickens was born on May 19, 1943, in Asheville, North Carolina. She was a woman of extraordinary character, defined by her deep faith, unwavering devotion to her family, and commitment to serving others. A dedicated lifelong learner, Helen pursued her passion for healthcare by obtaining her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree and two Associates Degrees in Business Administration and Early Childhood Development. Her educational journey was a testament to her belief in personal growth and continuous development, a value she passionately instilled in her children and those around her.
A pillar of her church and community, Helen was renowned for her servant's heart and profound love for God. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her through challenges with remarkable grace and resilience. She touched countless lives through her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to her family and community.
A foundation of elegance and strength, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, James and Emma Dell McMickens, her brothers James McMickens Jr. and Raymond McMickens, grandsons Damion, Esshawndell , and Londell Foster and daughter Carmen McDowell. She is survived by her children: Julia McDowell-Robinson, Patrina McDowell-Mayes, Julius McDowell III, LaTanya McDowell, and Prophet Allah. Her extensive family includes 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service to honor the life of Helen will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church (100 Carroll Ave.), at 11am. She will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler. The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
Rest in peace, beloved Granny. Your legacy of love, faith, and compassion will continue to inspire and guide your family for generations to come. Though you will be deeply missed, we find solace in knowing you are now in the loving presence of the Lord.
