Elizabeth Fretwell Obituary

Elizabeth Cumie Sharpe Fretwell

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin and Friend, Elizabeth transitioned to her Heavenly resting place on Monday, May 18, 2020 at Haywood County Hospital. She was born Dec 21, 1923 in Jackson County, NC to the late Lee Conley and Mary Sharpe. She married her late husband John Fretwell Jr. on Feb 16, 1945, and to this union one son was born, James Fretwell Sr. She was the eldest of 4 children. She became a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Canton, NC at a young age where she continued to be an active member. Over the years she served over the Fellowship Hall, on the Missionaries, and was Chairwoman of numerous programs.

Elizabeth was a cook at Diners in Canton and was a head cook at Lamburth Inn and The Terrace Hotel at Lake Junaluska Assembly for many years. In her later years she was a Foster Grandparent with Canton Headstart and North Canton Elementary School. Elizabeth had a love for sports and was blessed to yell from the stands for her son all the way down to her great great grandson. An active member of her community, she always had a place at her table for any and everyone to sit down and have something to eat. Everyone loved her food and no one could come close to her pound cakes.

Her love for the Lord and her church was always strong. She was always inviting friends and family to come to her church. She'd say, "Come hear Rev. Williams. He always has a good word from the Lord." Elizabeth's life was a true testimony of faith, courage, strength and a desire to always grow closer to the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her brother Monroe, sisters Lucille and Arlene and a great grandson Little Kenny.

Left to cherish her memory are her son James Fretwell Sr., grandchildren James Muhammad (Erica), Sheryl Fretwell, Brenda Getty's (Ralph), Kevin Darity (Mildred) and Niece Tucker, 15 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Viewing for Mrs. Fretwell will be held Sunday May 24th from 12pm - 6pm at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest during a private family service.

God saw you were getting tired

A golden heart stopped beating,

Hard working hands to rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us,

He only takes the best.
