Derek Thomas Hennessee Sr., a faithful servant of the Lord and his community, was born on July 4, 1957, and departed this earth to be with the Lord on October 5, 2025.
Derek was educated in the Asheville School System and was a proud member of the Asheville High School graduating class of 1976.
He loved to travel, never meeting a stranger which resulting in his spreading joy wherever he went. Derek dedicated his life to serving God and people, both professionally and personally. He was blessed with the gift of making people feel welcome and loved, and he used daily while working for the City of Asheville Transit (ART – Asheville Rides Transit) and later with Mission Health Valet and Transport. His infectious presence and distinctive laugh touched the lives of many throughout the community.
Derek was a spiritual man and active in his faith for many years. As a member of St. John Baptist Church in Fletcher, NC, he served faithfully as an armor bearer and was dedicated to several ministries, including the Men’s Ministry, until his health began to decline.
Above all, Derek was devoted to his family. He took great pride in being a loving son, husband, brother, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Naomi and Charles Clifton Hennessee Jr., and his siblings Charles, Clifton, and Anne Hennessee.
Derek leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 26 years Malina, his children Reginald Hopson (Nichole), of Charlotte, Derek Jr. (Tequia), Virginia Leigh, Desmond, and Marketa of Charlotte, his brother David Whipple. 13 grandchildren. 3 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and many MANY friends.
Derek’s nurturing spirit and infectious smile will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A Funeral Service to honor the life of Derek will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church (146 Pine St.), at 1pm. He will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Viewing will be held at Avery's Memorial Chapel on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 12pm - 7pm.
