Charles Scott, Sr. Obituary

MR. CHARLES MARVIN SCOTT, SR., affectionately known as "Scottie", was born June 2, 1937, in Asheville, and departed this life on July 1, 2024, at Hospice of Care Partners. He was the fifth oldest of seven children, born to the late Georgia Bell Scott. Other than his beloved mother, Charles was also preceded in death by sisters Irene Mack and Mildred Scott, brother Bobby Scott, and daughter Marvis Gail Dillingham Davidson.

A lifelong resident of Asheville, he attended Stephens - Lee High School where he graduated in the Class of 1956. Shortly after graduating, he earned a scholarship to Morris Brown College where he was able to freely express his sincere LOVE for music and singing. He worked with the Asheville City Schools system for over 39 years. Many remember him from working at Rankin and Vance Elementary Schools. After several months of retirement, he started working part-time at the Diana Wortham Parking Deck downtown for over 10 years. He was a faithful member of St. John Church of God Holiness on McDowell St., where he served in many roles including the Men's Choir, Church Choir, National Convention Choir, Deacon's Ministry, and wherever he was needed.

Charles' love for music and singing started at a very early age. He used to listen to music and sing to his siblings. His children fondly remember hearing him sing and whistle throughout the house, and many others were graced the same way as he worked. Those who knew him through his LOVE for his family, and his unique style of dress, often referred to him as "The man that was cleaner than the board of health!" Singing for the Glory of GOD was paramount to him. Outside of his church, he sang with several other groups and organizations. The Reynolds Miller Chorale, Gospel Voices and National Convention Choirs, just to name a few. His love for music gave him life, and his gift of singing gave life to others.

Left to cherish his memory are daughters Antoria "Cupcake" Scott of Asheville and Tamala "Roast Beef" Scott of Charlotte, sons Charles "Red" Scott, Jr., and Alton "Floyd" Scott, both of Charlotte, mother of his children Ms. Peggy "Brown Sugar'' Dillingham of Asheville, brother Carl Williams of Asheville, sisters Margaret Fuller of Asheville and Gwendolyn Boseman of Chicago, IL, grandchildren Nekeya Dillingham and Apryl Welch (Anquan), both of Tennessee, Keith Dillingham of Asheville, Travis Burgin of New York, Tamryn Darity of Charlotte, Alton Scott, Jr., currently stationed in Korea, and Kage Abdul Allah of Charlotte, 9 great-grandchildren, and a host of other nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

One thing is for certain, and two things are for sure, if you ever met him, you could never forget him, and if you ever heard him sing, he will forever be in your heart.
