Calvin Gilliland Obituary

Calvin Lawrence Gilliland, known to everyone as *Lonnie*, passed away on January 29, 2026, at the age of 67. Born on November 3, 1958, in Mills River, North Carolina, Lonnie was the beloved son of Edward and Marybelle Gilliland, who preceded him in death. Calvin was also preceded in death by his brother Edward Lee Brown of Mills River, Sister Rachael Gilliland of Philadelphia, his Sister Elizabeth Ann Smith of Fort Pierce Fl. his brothers, James Brown -(Denise of the home), Douglas Gilliland- (Deborah of the home) Calvin was the youngest of 13 Children.

 

Lonnie is survived by his three daughters, whom he loved dearly: TiAani Malone (Sean) of Flat Rock, Tasha Gilliland of Hendersonville, and Tara Samuel (Felix) of Columbia, SC. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Christopher, Kingston, Johnathan,Felix, Alexis, Felicity,Marissa, Zachary,Farah and Farrell, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his siblings: Judy Norris of Asheville; Diana "Cookie" Mills of Arden, NC; Julie Gilliland of Philadelphia; Margaret Betterson of Philadelphia; Edwin Gilliland (Shelia) of Arden, NC; Juanita Gilliland of Hendersonville, NC; and Darlene Davis (James) of Fletcher. Lonnie's family was large, loving, and deeply connected, and he cherished each one of them. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews and great nephews and great nieces.

 

Lonnie was loved by all who knew him. If someone needed help and he was able, he was always there-no hesitation, no questions asked. He was a devoted brother, a loyal friend, and a father and grandfather whose love knew no limits. His kindness, generosity, and steady presence touched countless lives. Many of his friends considered him family, loving him as a brother.

 

While our hearts are heavy and tears fall freely, we rest in the comfort that God knows best. Lonnie's love, his laughter, and the memories he leaves behind will remain with us always. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the funeral home for their care, compassion, and support during this difficult time.

 

Although our hearts are heavy and tears roll down our cheeks, and we feel the deep absence of your presence, you are gone but never forgotten. In our hearts you will forever rest. We will miss you-Daddy, Brother, Granddad, Brother-in-law and Dear friend. You left us without warning; none of us could have imagined it would be you. But God made His decision, and there was nothing we could do. We pray that God carries you into your next journey, to a place of peace and rest. – Your Family

 

A Memorial Service to honor the life of Lonnie will be held Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Greater New Zion Baptist Church (38 Talley Dr., Fletcher, NC), at 4pm.
