Mr. Alfonso Calvin Darity, affectionately known as “Jug”, departed this life peacefully at the Oaks of Brevard on Monday, January 22, 2024.
A native of Henderson County, he was born October 16, 1950, to the late Frank Darity, Sr. and Norma Gilliland Darity. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Darity, Jr.; sisters, Annie L. Coleman, Theresa Darity Williams, Alice Darity Ware, and Peggy Ann Darity.
Alfonso graduated from West Henderson High School. He could always find a good-paying job and worked at Ecusta Corporation, Cranston Print Works, and Seneca Foods. He was a handyman and built a machine to create carpets. Surrounded by a family of good cooks, he loved a good T-bone steak. He also enjoyed listening to music, playing the guitar, and watching Atlanta Braves baseball. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sons, Alfonso Darity, Jr. and Rodney Darity of Charlotte; daughter, Tanisha Upkins of Charlotte; granddaughters, Zamaria Darity and Jada Upkins of Charlotte and Valerie Darity of Gastonia; grandson, Christopher Upkins of Charlotte; sister, Diane Parrish (Kenneth Rice) of Fletcher; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A Funeral Service to honor the life of Alfonso will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at St. John Baptist Church (14 Legend Dr., Arden) at 11am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Avery's Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 12pm - 7pm. The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
