Mr. Willie Lee Hawthorne, known to family and friends as “Uncle Boy,” age 67, passed away on September 28, 2018 at Charles George V.A. Medical Center.
A native of Asheville, he was born on January 20, 1951 and is the son of the late Matthew Jake Hawthorne Sr. and Lucille Isabel Love (Polly).
Willie attended Shiloh School and enlisted in the U. S. Army as a Specialist 4 in 1971. He was honorably discharged after 6 years of service, and then was employed at Ball Brothers Glass and A-Red Cab Company.
He loved cars, music, his family, bowling, driving, dancing, singing and cooking.
Willie will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary C. Hawthorne, sons; Kareem McDowell, Sr. (Karla) and Avante Carson, siblings; Hadayah-Saleem (Lincoln Crosse), Henrietta Hawthorne, Joyce Hawthorne-Woods, Michael Hawthorne, Anthony Hawthorne, step-children; Dawn Wyatt (Malcom), Dierdre Johnson, Darrell Johnson (Pam), Duriel Jenkins (Ariette), Charmar Jenkins (Ashley), grand-children; Makayla McDowell, Kareem McDowell, Jr., step-grandchildren; Lucian Johnson, Desiree Johnson, Devon Johnson (Karmen), Michelle Lanza, Michael Lanza, Melissa Diaz, Skylar Jenkins, Amaya Jackson, special niece, Antonia Woods-Norris, special nephew, Antonio Woods, special cousins; Carolyn McIntosh, Gabriel Love, Sr., sister-in-law, Emily Cheatuam, brother-in-law, Michael Cheauam and faithful companion "Buddy" and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday October 5 at 12pm, at the Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church on 100 Carroll Ave. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will immediately follow at the WC Veteran's Cemetery in Black Mountain.
