Patricia Blakely McCurry, 68 of 119 Carroll Ave, Asheville NC departed this earth on Monday, July 1st.
A life long resident of Asheville, Patricia attended the all black Stephens-Lee High School. Integration closed the school in 1965. She subsequently graduated from South French Broad in 1969.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents Preston and Virginia Blakely.
Known for her fun loving spirt and willingness to cook for anyone in need, Pat’s kitchen was always open to all. Sunday dinners were always a treat if you happened by for a friendly welcome and a plate full of Pat’s cooking.
Patricia retired from the Asheville Transit Authority in 1992 where she drove the city bus for 32 years as the first female African American bus driver in the area.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Harold McCurry, step daughter Coquitta Flemming, children; Anthony Howell (Jackie) of Durham NC, Jonathan Blakely (Namurah) of Asheville NC and Theodis Howell of Asheville NC, sisters; Barbara Martin (Nathaniel) of San Rafael California, Yolanda Choice (Jack) of Petaluma California, Revella Debrew of Asheville NC and Erika Blakely of Rohnert Park California, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.
A longtime member of St. James AME Church, she will be eulogized there on Monday, July 8th at 12 o’clock noon. Visitation will be held at 11:30 am before the service. Burial will immediately follow the funeral at Sunset Cemetery.
