Eugene Hadden Obituary

Eugene Sebren Hadden 78, transitioned from this life to his eternal resting place at the John F. Keever Solace Hospice Center on Sunday September 22, 2019. He was born March 13, 2019 1941 to the late James and Willie Mae Hadden in Asheville, NC.

Eugene was a long-time worker at American Enka in Candler, NC, after the plant closed, he ventured out and started his own business in 1978.

Eugene found a helping hand at the end of his arm, when he started selling ice cream, popsicles and fudgesicles, this grew into a full grown “Rolling Store” and the rest is history……. The “Candyman” was born.

Eugene had a vision and it came to be, to start he bought a mail truck for little or nothing, he had no cash to buy inventory so he had to pick up small jobs such as taking pictures at local night spots and selling rugs that could be used as floor and/or wall art. This earned him enough income to increase his inventory. The Rolling Store was a family enterprise with his wife Gert and his children.

Eugene maintained the Rolling Store for 35+ years until his vision became impaired which caused him to slow down with the store. If you knew our daddy, he could not stay still, he had to be doing something, so he started working at IFB (Industry for the Blind), he worked at IFB for 9 1/2 years. IFB became his 2nd family, he grew to loved them and they loved them some “Eugene”.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents Willie Mae and James Hadden Sr., his brother James Calvin Hadden Jr. his daughter Germaine Hunter, brother June Calvin Hadden, grandson Mi’kel Hunter, brother Dorsey Hadden, son Kendall “Tony” King and brother Curtis Hadden.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 47 years Gert Hadden, Children: Cassandra Howell of Asheville NC, Eugenia (Robert) Fields of Charleston SC, Eugenia (James) Blake of Detroit Michigan and Regina (Arthur) Edwards of San Diego California. Brothers: William (Ernestine) Hadden of Las Vegas NV, Charles (Lisa) Hadden, Walter Lee Hadden all of Asheville NC. Sisters: Barbara Warren, Joyce Briscoe both of Asheville NC and Karon Dwight of Beaufort SC, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and lots of friends.

“HE WAS KNOWN AND LOVED AS THE CANDYMAN”
