Dorothy Ann Metz-Oglesby was born June 6, 1936 in Asheville, NC to the late Edwin Metz and Sara J. Metz and she was the loving niece of Mrs. Eloise Piercy. Dorothy went to her eternal home on October 13, 2018. She was a life long resident of Asheville, NC where she attended Asheville City Schools and was a 1955 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School. She spent her life in service to her family, church, friends and the community she loved.
“Aunt Dot” or “Miss Dot”, as she was lovingly called by the children she worked with, retired from years of service with the Asheville City School System after 27 years of employment. Miss Dot was always busy helping somebody and even up to her departing this life she was an active participant in the Grandparent Program at Claxton Elementary School. She loved entertaining family and friends. Cooking was one of her favorite things to do and she didn’t mind at all sharing her tasty dishes.
Dorothy was a devoted member of St. James A.M.E. Church. She was active in Bible Study and the Western North Carolina Conferences. She served as a Steward of the church and as a member of the Lay Organization, Kitchen Committee, Gospel Choir, W.L. Williams 20th Century Club, and Perfecting Praise Choir. Dorothy was also a “Mother” of the Church. A quiet blessing to all, she was a confidante and a praying friend to everyone in the church, especially her pastor. She was faithful in all she did.
One of 5 children, she is survived by her siblings, Harold J. Williams of San Antonio, Texas and Richard L. Metz of Asheville, NC, her dear sister-in-law, Olivia Gibson Metz and a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and other family members and friends.
Dorothy leaves behind many, many close friends including her very special friends, Anna Butler, Doris Stewart, Doris Walker and Reverend Edwards.
Dorothy’s memory will always be cherished by her family and friends who loved her. She will be greatly missed.
Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord. (Psalms 31:24)
